Growth Marketing Director, Monzo
David Brewerton is Growth Marketing Director at Monzo. Previously he was Head of Marketing & Customer Comms at Metro Bank (UK). He was in The Marketing Academy’s Class of 23, and Mark Ritson once called him a “splendid marketer”, which kind of says it all. You can go deep with David on his episode of The Places We’ll Go Marketing Show.
“Fundamentally it hasn’t changed in decades.”
The interview
What’s your coffee ritual?
Completely random depending on my day. Ideally strong and frothy. Coffee over tea all day.
What was your first marketing job?
E-marketing executive for a small business = badly designing physical brochures, strangely enough. The title didn’t match the to-do list.
What finance apps do you have on your home screen?
Monzo (obvs), Sprive helps overpay on the mortgage, Santander UK for the mortgage.
Which newsletter, podcast, or book do you recommend most?
Shout out to The Places We’ll Go Marketing Show podcast.
What’s an underrated growth channel in fintech?
Underrated is a tricky one. It doesn’t feel like there is a hidden gem nobody knows about or isn’t using. The oldies are the goodies, but maybe YouTube - especially with growing LLM influence.
What keeps you up at night?
The U12 girls football team I coach, mostly!
What are the most useful measurement tools you use in your work?
Not really a tool - the trusty geo / incrementality test still takes the measurement crown.
What’s one fintech brand (other than your own) that’s getting marketing right?
I think Klarna still does a great job, looks like they know their customer really well.
Why is marketing so hard?
It’s not really. Fundamentally it hasn’t changed in decades. People make it hard by missing the fundamentals of strategy and getting straight to the doing, and some believe they have cracked the code by building a social brand, then struggle because it doesn’t transfer and scale beyond social when it needs to.
