The interview
What’s your coffee ritual?
Basic! A Nespresso pod at home. On office days, I pick up a flat white from Saint Espresso near ClearBank towers.
What was your first marketing job?
At university I worked part-time as a brand rep for Corona! I was a shocking ambassador as I didn’t drink it myself, but very popular with my housemates given the endless supply of free beer. An invaluable introduction to marketing not being as glamorous as I might have believed!
What finance apps do you have on your home screen?
I have recently been consolidating my pensions (and feeling very smug about it), and have got down to two: Scottish Widows and Mylo by Aegon (the Mylo app is better). They are in a neat ‘Money’ folder along with banking apps and the rest.
Which newsletter, podcast, or book do you recommend most?
I was gifted a copy of Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara and really enjoyed it. It’s all about taking ordinary experiences and transforming them by going above and beyond expectations - something we all have the capability to do.
What’s an underrated growth channel in fintech?
Word of mouth and client referrals. A viral campaign is thrilling, but in B2B fintech, trust travels faster and your clients are your biggest promoters.
What keeps you up at night?
Caffeine after 2pm, season 2 of The Gentlemen on Netflix, and the never ceasing urge to check the front door is, in fact, locked.
What are the most useful measurement tools you use in your work?
Salesforce is our single source of truth and Peec AI is great.
What’s one fintech brand (other than your own) that’s getting marketing right?
I really like what Zilch are doing, and it’s working - they are rapidly scaling. Their CEO also co-founded the UCFT (Unicorn Council for UK Fintech) to create a platform for UK fintech founders and CEOs to work closely with the government to support high-growth tech companies.
Why is marketing so hard?
Everyone experiences marketing in one way or another, so everyone has an opinion on it and often thinks they can do it! Knowledge and experience help combat this, but data speaks the loudest and quiets the noise.
